ASP.NET Core

ASP.NET is Microsoft's technology family for building websites, services and web applications. The original ASP.NET runs on .NET Framework; ASP.NET Core is the modern, cross-platform framework. Understanding that distinction helps explain the development approaches and benefits discussed below.

What is ASP.NET?

ASP.NET is part of the .NET ecosystem for server-side web development. The older framework includes approaches such as MVC (Model–View–Controller) and Web Forms and supports languages including C# and Visual Basic. ASP.NET Core offers a different, modern foundation; Web Forms is not part of ASP.NET Core. These technologies are used to create applications of different sizes and complexity.

Benefits of ASP.NET

1. Performance

The platform provides tools for building efficient web applications. Compiled code and runtime optimisations can support fast responses and efficient use of server resources. Actual performance depends on application design, database access, hosting and testing.

2. Security features

ASP.NET provides authentication, authorisation and other security mechanisms. Framework features help developers address risks such as cross-site scripting and request forgery, while parameterised database access helps prevent SQL injection. These tools still require correct implementation and configuration; a framework does not automatically make an application secure.

3. Development tools

A broad set of tools and libraries supports development. Environments such as Visual Studio simplify writing, building and debugging code, helping developers work productively and shorten delivery cycles.

4. Reusable and maintainable code

Architectural approaches such as MVC separate models, views and controllers. That separation can make code easier to understand, reuse, maintain and extend. Older ASP.NET applications may also use Web Forms, which has a different programming model.

5. Libraries and framework support

The .NET ecosystem provides libraries that reduce the need to recreate common functionality. ASP.NET Core, Entity Framework and SignalR offer building blocks for web applications, database access and real-time communication.

6. Cross-platform operation

ASP.NET Core can run on Windows, Linux and macOS. This gives teams more flexibility in choosing development and hosting environments. This cross-platform capability should not be confused with the Windows-focused original ASP.NET on .NET Framework.

7. Community support

An active developer community provides examples, discussions and resources for solving problems. Official documentation and community experience help teams learn the platform and keep their skills current.
